Haha, this poem is funny (in a darkly sort of way).

It's about a person of mixed blood (part African) who, to advance in society, conformed to the Anglo-Saxon standard unquestioningly and hid the fact that he was part black. But after he died, his widow unwitting let that fact out.

i think he didn;t try to hide the fact that he was half black. Because he tried everything as possible to be better........
So is the point of the poem talk about racialism is very serious and people can hardly do anything to change it, no matter how much effort they put in? Is this the point that the poet wanted to tell us?
And he stand out a lot in his race, didn;t he?

全诗通篇在讲述一个混血男的痛苦人生（his mother's skin was the sign of error）

自小被人告戒母亲的低下出身

所以在成长的过程中无论是从学业（won scholarship, best school）、个人爱好（disclaimed kinship with ...）、立场（chose prudent, raceless view ...）直到自己的爱情（his bride both Jewish and Episcopalian，跟他一样属于种族之间混血联姻）、社交（line 17~20）

最后他带着这种ethnic weights死去

全篇满是一种痛苦、辛酸

那么theme就不难得出

诗人通过描写这么一个姓氏并不确定的（Mr. Z）到底想要表达什么亦或批判什么制度什么社会现象？

剩下的就请LZ自己去发挥乐

另不妨联系诗人的背景来阐述观点

Although he has tried every means to shrink from his race, Mr. Z is doomed to be bound with it. No one could abandon his colour, belief and race which are rooted in his blood.
