玩家将跟随著名的考古学家康拉德·摩尔斯的脚部进入神秘的“Barrow”世界，揭开史前文明以及诡异事件的惊人秘密，但在冒险路途中，你的步伐并不仅仅是简单的收集怪石圈的石头，或是新奇的玩意儿，也许所有的考古并不是都有建设性的一一，但有很多古老且具历史价值的东西深埋在地底深处，并从未被开发过，这些东西才是你应该需要调查，并为之热衷的事情。游戏将采用第一人称的视角去展开游戏剧情，当玩家从令人恐惧的林地向荒凉的农场大楼前行时，你会感到远处似乎有一双眼睛正悄悄的窥视着你，所有的风吹草动都会让你胆战心惊，即便是如此，你也要去唤醒沉睡已久的过往，探询远古遗迹背后的真相。游戏场景设置从圣井到黑森林，再到游戏最终的目的地怪石圈，地图相当的庞大。尽管游戏背景设置在风景秀丽的英国康沃尔郡，但游戏并没有过多的渲染康沃尔郡美丽的沙滩和秀丽的风景，而是着重于烘托游戏的恐怖气息，游戏主要以暗色调为基底，昏暗的灯光，偶尔一阵阴风吹过，树叶沙沙作响的声音等，无不让人惊惧悚栗。为了能更真实的表现远古遗迹，制作组特意在怪石圈拍摄了数千张照片，无论是白天或黑夜的各个场景，细节，他们都一一记录下来，为的是将这些时间段的不同内容放到游戏中，以求更完善的表达出遗址的真实性，制作组将实际挖掘现场的依照照片作为参照，在运用高科技去创造出在相同位置一样的图片。除此之外，制作组在制作游戏的过程中，采用了3D建模重现当地的建筑和地标，从古代异教徒之泉，到优雅但被毁坏的礼拜堂遗址，他们都尽肯能的制造出诡谲怪异的游戏氛围，制作组还录制了当地的音效环境。
