help: how to create good AVI from DVD?

Now I have dvd2avi and VirtualDub and try to convert DVD to AVI format. After I converted it with 900kbps that the quality isn't very good.
Could you suggest any programs and tell me how to create a good quality AVI file please. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
