and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao flew to Sichuan hours after the earthquake struck
to direct the disaster response.
News of the quake has dominated television coverage. The state-controlled media
has been especially aggressive in its coverage, with reporters fanning out
across the stricken region. Home video, cell phone images and commentary have
been flowing uncensored onto Internet Web sites.

The quake is Chinaˇs biggest natural disaster since another earthquake
leveled the city of Tangshan in eastern China in 1976, leaving 240,000 people
dead and posing a severe challenge to the governing Communist Party, which
initially tried to cover up the catastrophe.

But the response of Chinaˇs government to an earthquake that struck the
central Sichuan province on the afternoon of Monday May 12th appears to be
strikingly different to that of Myanmarˇs brutal regime after its cyclone
earlier this month. News of the cyclone took several days to trickle out from
Myanmar, where the governmentˇs response has been desperately inadequate. In
contrast, details of Chinaˇs earthquake are being spread quickly, and the
official response has so far been unusually open.

Premier Wen Jiabao, who was on scene directing rescue efforts, was seen bowing
three times in a ritual of respect for the dead before the ruins of a collapsed
school in the town of Dujiayuan, not far from the epicenter, the official
agency said. Wen declared that the soldiers, police and other rescuers should
make clearing roads to reach those pinned under the rubble their top priority.
Wen, who flew in from Beijing soon after the scale of the disaster became
apparent, has been photographed and televised repeatedly handing down orders to
rescue workers and shouting encouragement to victims. His display of concern,
and its swift reporting by the official media, was in marked contrast to the
secretive way the Communist Party has handled emergencies in the past.

About 900 teenagers were buried under a collapsed three-storey school building.
Wen Jiabao, the Chinese Premier, who flew to the region after the quake hit,
bowed three times in grief before some of the first 50 bodies were pulled out.

The foreign ministry said that it welcomed offers of international aid.
Local radio and television in Sichuan were broadcasting round-the-clock
coverage of the disaster taking telephone calls from distraught relatives and
passing on messages to loved ones out of contact at the heart of the quake.

China instituted tight controls on information about the disaster, setting up
checkpoints to try to bar Chinese and foreign correspondents from the most
severely affected areas.
