Returning to Base--words that can change your perspective
"Returning to base"(commonly abbreviated as "RTB") is what a pilot says right before heading back to base after the completion of a mission. The term "Engaging" signals that the pilot is about to attack the enemy. Both phrases are commonly used in shows of this genre, but the latter tends to crop up more oftern in anime that incorporate aerial combat scenes. However, Sentou Yousei Yukikaze is different. The Yukikaze and its pilot Rei are under orders to collect information and bring it back to base safely. In order to accomplish their mission, they're allowed to abandon friendly planes. In a sense, that's a cruel mission. If you don't help your friends, then how can you expect them to want to protect you in return? Unfortunately, the Yukikaze is forced to follow an old battlefield rule and assume that everyone in the surrounding area is a potential adversary and should be regarded as hostile. This assumptionis significant in a show like this that focuses on communication. If you believe you're surrounded by enemies, it's difficult to imagine how you should communicate with them. But as soon as you signal "RTB", at least half of the targets cease to be enemies, because you've explicitly identified one part of the world (the base) as friendly. Thus, "RTB" is a phrase that can change your whole perspective, as it does for the Yukikaze.
