An epic tale of a young pilot抯 first faltering steps into space - set in an alien world strangely familiar to our own. Shirotsugh (Shiro) Lhadatt aspires to be a pilot, but his low academic grades land him in the Royal Space Force - a career dead-end. One night, he meets a beautiful woman distributing religious pamphlets and finds himself drawn to her energy and enthusiasm. This young woman, Riquinni, has a profound influence on Shiro, giving him a new sense of faith and fostering his desire to become the first true astronaut in the Royal Space Force. As their relationship develops, Shiro transforms from a down-and-out underachiever to a champion against government corruption and ultimately, a reluctant national hero.
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise ("Honneamise no Tsubasa - Oritsu Uchugun") is based on a short story written by the film's director, Hiroyuki Yamaga. In the hopes of finding a sponsor for a feature-length adaptation, Yamaga formed what was later to become the GAINAX Production Company to produce a four-minute animated short. The stunning visuals in Wings were rendered by more than 3,000 animators, including some of the biggest names in anime. Several of the animators traveled to the U.S. on a research expedition. With the intention of creating an entirely fictional society, the group visited the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. to study aircraft design, examine space hardware and watch early footage of space launches. They also attended the launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery at Cape Kennedy, Florida, and toured New York City to study Post-Modern architecture. In order to accurately capture all the technological intricacies of aerospace design, the pioneering animators relied upon newly developed computer-aided techniques . The power of the film is further enhanced by an original soundtrack by composer Ryuichi Sakamoto - the Oscar-winning co-composer of the score for "The Last Emperor." First released theatrically in America in 1994, The Wings of Honneamise is universally acknowledged as one of the finest Japanese animated feature films ever produced.
