這次介紹一個progressive metal的重量級代表樂團--dream theater(dt)
開始之前先來說說什麼叫做"progressive metal"吧
簡單來說前衛金屬是一種將樂器演奏技巧和樂理發揮到極致
富有深度意境歌詞的重金屬樂派
通常樂曲沒有一定標準的模式 節拍和曲速在歌曲中會不停的變換
而且常常會加入一些比較特殊拍子設計
音樂的進行利用不同的拍子組合而成
有各式各樣的變化形式 所以樂器演奏的複雜性與困難度非常高
典型的前衛金屬並不是單純一首一首歌的組合
而是以一個中心概念做為整張專輯的意象
提供一個非常廣闊的想像思考空間
所以歌詞比較抽象不太容易讓人理解

為什麼會接觸到dt是有原因的 大學偶意外加入了樂隊打擊組
而dt聞名世界的鼓手mike剛好是偶們教學錄影帶的模範
當偶第一次透過dvd看到他的示範真的是嘆為觀止:p:p
沒有華麗的表演噱頭 有的只是基本動作的熟練技巧
那種深深的共鳴讓偶感動了好久好久:):)

dt成立於1980年代中期
由來自於boston著名berklee music college的john petrucci(guitar)
mike portnoy(drum) john myung(bass)三位
再加上kevin moore(keyboard)所組成
87年charlie dominici加入擔任主唱
11月發行了第一張專輯
極佳的音樂性和技巧性展露出dt特有的特色 可惜這張專輯叫好不叫座
主唱的音色和實力沒辦法與dt所要求的音樂契合 於是被迫離開
一直到91年james labrie加入樂團
出色的音色和厚實的嗓音與dt成為完美的搭配
到這裡dt算是有了最完整的陣容:):)

能夠將故事情節與音樂充分結合
技巧與旋律的流暢性能兼容並蓄的前衛搖滾實在是很少
一旦故事的腳本確立之後 對白也差不多就定型了
這時候樂曲的流暢性就會變得非常重要
92年的專輯推出後獲得相當大的迴響
不僅將樂團的聲望帶到最高峰 也正式宣告前衛金屬時代的來臨
94年的可以說是dt向自我極限挑戰的一張高成就藝術作品
這張專輯的推出更確立了dt在前衛金屬樂界的領導地位
不過可惜的是8月keyboard手kevin因為個人原因離開了dt
後來加入的derek sherinian個人風格與整個樂團有很大的差異
97年10月推出了第五張專輯
跟dt以前的作品比較起來 這一張專輯的風格改變很大
不再完全只重視樂器編曲與技巧的高複雜度
反而更加重了整體氣氛的營造與旋律的優美感
專輯推出受到了兩極化的極端評價
可惜不是所有的樂迷都能夠接受這樣的改變
之後沉寂了一段時間 mike與petrucci趁著空檔
找了king crimson的tony levin(bass)
dixie dregs的jordan rudess(keyboard)
四個人合組了一個project團體---liquid tension experiment
並且推出了同名的演奏專輯意外大受好評
為了整個樂團發展空間的考量 jordan正式取代derek加入了dt:):)

99年發行了dt新生後的第一張作品
再次引爆前衛金屬樂界極大的震撼
dt等於完成了一張具有完整概念的前衛金屬歌劇(metallic opera)
同時與the who的 pink floyd的
以及queensryche的併稱為搖滾界四大歌劇:):)

樂團成員偶只特別介紹mike 理由是因為對他比較熟悉:):)
全名michael stephen portnoy 1967/4/20生於new york的long beach
從小就開始對音樂有興趣 加上爸爸是dj的關係所以聽過很多種音樂
mike一開始打鼓全是自己摸索的 高中修過一些音樂方面的課程
後來憑著不錯的成績申請獎學金進入了有名的berklee music college
大學期間組合成立了dream theater
除了dt之外 另外還兼任兩個project樂團
(liquid tension experiment與transatlantic)
也曾經當選過mondern drummer top ten的鼓手

除了個人背景之外偶還特別想介紹的是他的配備
一般人頂多一個大鼓 配合雙踏
他的大鼓居然就放了三個 這是非常難的
mike打鼓只靠幾種簡單的概念像是拆拍 變拍 怪拍 雙大等等來組合
但是這對編鼓來說實在是很好用的概念
也是他最讓人嘖嘖稱奇的地方:):)
他很擅長在歌曲加裝飾點
使得節奏聽起來很花但又不失主要節奏點的本質
技巧在變拍方面的表現真的很出神入化 棒透了~~
打鼓的時候他的左腳幾乎都是放在另外一個大鼓的踏板上
想當初偶為了雙踏 左腳還練習了好一陣子@_@
常常會聽到他的過門很流暢 訣竅就是在於他的雙腳
一起和手穿插過門節拍就可以填得很滿了
再加上大鼓收音收得好 聽起來真的是順阿~~

這次介紹整張專輯

專輯中的五位故事主角
1.hypnotherapist
催眠師 主導nicholas的全程催眠治療 也是整張專輯的主要人物

2.nicholas
經常為夢境困擾的男主角 終日惶惶不安
不得已求助於催眠治療 回到前世一探究竟

3.victoria page
nicholas的前生 因為男朋友julian嗜賭成癮
在灰心之餘讓ed乘虛而入 形成了一段三角戀情引來殺生之禍

4.julian baynes(sleeper)
victoria的男朋友 因為沉迷於賭博而死得不明不白 這裡稱為sleeper

5.senator edward baynes(miracle)
julian的弟弟 在victoria傷心無助的情況下給了"奇蹟"似的安慰
而且"奇蹟"似的得到victoria的芳心 所以這邊稱miracle

故事的大綱大概說一下
起源於男主角nicholas經年累月為同一個夢境所困擾
他知道事出必有因 或許與前世的因果有關
於是求助於催眠治療 經由催眠師多次的催眠
nicholas終於解開了謎底...

02.Overture 1928
(Instrumental)
第二首"Overture 1928"將故事回朔到1928年 事件發生當時的時代背景
隨著mike的鼓聲由小逐漸變大 很漂亮的營造了被催眠者進入夢境的場景
節奏急促而且經過多次節拍與樂段的轉換
可以聽到petrucci的電吉他與jordon的keyboard配合的很完美
petrucci經過了一些project樂團的試驗跟練習 手法也更純熟
而mike的鼓更是從頭到尾一直緊迫跟隨
john的bass更是不甘勢弱 如影隨行緊跟著mike的鼓點
這首序曲為這場複雜曲折的三角戀情做了最佳的開場詮釋:):)

deja-vu是法文 似曾相識的意思
nicholas經由催眠治療進入前世 體會到當時victoria的感覺
歌詞描寫的是nicholas自身的感覺 前半段是他在催眠夢境中的feeling
而後半段是nicholas返回現實世界的時候
對夢境中見到的事物和目前自己的身心狀況做比對之後的一種反思
而victoria的歌詞是nicholas在催眠時感應到victoria當時的身心狀況:):)

曲子急轉直下變成沈重的節拍
背景悠揚的合聲陪襯出令人替victoria婉惜的場景
接著without faith without hope
在mike急促而連續的鼓點引導下轉進到下一個樂段
這一段真是棒到無話可說
keyboard與guitar的對彈 更是噴淚到可圈可點啦~~~~~:):)

短短的歌詞清楚的刻劃出三位劇中主角內心最深沈的一面
首先歌曲一開始時寧靜中所夾帶的背景音效
再夾帶輕彈的acoustic guitar與sitar琴
那聲音有一種孤寂 停滯 苦悶 乃至於流連忘返的感覺

這首使用到了sitar琴 這是來自於印度的一種樂器
而所謂的輪迴與轉世的思想源自於印度
這種樂器的使用事實上已經把故事形而上的哲學思想加以具體化
其次sitar的琴聲以及樂曲本身的調子 具有印度音樂的色彩
對於西方人來說 印度距離他們算是很遠
因此這種樂曲的安排暗示了劇中人物偏離了正道
他們急於求得心靈的解脫 或者脫離家太遠了 如今他們歸心似箭
sitar琴之後是keyboard與guitar solo的對彈 bass也緊抓著主旋律不放
mike的鼓從頭到尾變拍連連 過門的非常棒阿~~~~~~:):)
petrucci 一段古典華麗的吉他速彈則將整首歌曲帶入最高潮

故事中的兩位主角 julian嗜賭如命 ed愛上自己兄弟的情人
每個人都知道自己不對 內心都在掙扎
每個人都想解脫以求得內心世界的安寧
而那種安寧的內心世界就是"home"在這裡的真正涵意:):)

前面兩首歌表達了nicholas經由催眠了解到victoria與自己的前生
這首歌補充交代他在催眠的過程中還看到了其他的異相
更重要的是從中nicholas發現victoria與ed之間的戀情
引發他認為victoria的死因恐怕沒那麼單純
進而讓他再作進一步的催眠而找到事情的真相
這首歌nicholas以第三人稱的角度
分別描述出這兩個男人的心結 也陳述了他自己的看法~~

這首是演奏曲子 可以聽到很強烈華麗的keyboard與guiter的對彈
正好和"Overture 1928"前後呼應~~
